Benefits of segments
Segments and groups help enterprise owners and admins efficiently organize entities and define user scopes. By categorizing entities into segments, you can manage them based on specific criteria, such as country, city, or other attributes. Groups within segments allow for further refinement, making it easier to oversee entity operations. This structured organization enhances visibility, simplifies user management, and ensures clear access boundaries.
Segments definition
Segments are categories used to organize entities. In CXP there are two types of segments:
- Global segments: are segments that cannot be modified and are based on general attributes of the entity as stored in our database. The available global segments are:
- Brand, as defined in our database.
- City, as defined in our database.
- Continent, as defined in our database.
- Country, as defined in our database.
- Sector (as defined during the entity upload)
- Custom segments: are segments that can be defined at the organization level and are applicable to all entities. Custom segment can refer to any entity attribute that has a meaning for the organization.
Each segment can have one or more groups, which further divide the segment into manageable subsets based on specific filters. Groups make it easy to view the entities included and ensure precise monitoring.
How to add a segment
- Navigate to the Segments tab on the Entities page.
- Click on Add segment in the top right corner.
- Enter the name of the segment.
- Click on Next in the bottom right corner.
- Enter the name of a group.
- Select attribute filter(s) to include entities in this group.
- Click on Save in the bottom right corner.
Once created, a custom segment can be modified or removed.
How to add groups to a segment
Once a segment is created, you can add more groups to further refine entity categorization.
- Go to the segment where you want to add groups.
- Click on Add group in the top right corner.
- Enter the name of the group.
- Select attribute filter(s) to include entities in this group.
- Click on Save in the bottom right corner.
Each group allows you to view the entities included, providing transparency and clarity on how entities are organized within your groups. Once created, a group can also be modified or removed.
Important considerations
-
Segments follow the MECE principle: Segments are designed to be Mutually Exclusive and Collectively Exhaustive (MECE). This means that each entity can belong to only one group within a segment, ensuring no overlap between groups. At the same time, all entities will be accounted for, leaving no gaps in categorization.
-
Unassigned group: Once a segment is created, any entities that do not meet the conditions of the defined groups will be automatically included in an Unassigned group. This ensures all entities are captured and visible, even if they don’t fit into a specific group.
-
Multi-select custom attributes are not supported: Custom attributes that allow multi-selection cannot be used to create segments. This ensures that the segment logic remains consistent and aligned with the MECE principle.
