Benefits of custom attributes
Custom attributes allow organizations to tailor their data organization and analysis for improved management. Key benefits include:
- Enhanced categorization: Customize fields to better represent organizational needs.
- Accurate business structure representation: Align data with organizational changes and their unique requirements.
- Actionable insights: Derive meaningful insights from enhanced data segmentation and management.
- Survey customization: Support conditional survey questions based on entity-specific attributes, ensuring more relevant and actionable feedback.
Custom attributes definition
Custom attributes are user-defined fields that can be added to entities to improve differentiation and segmentation. These attributes support various types:
- Single-select field: For selecting one option.
- Multi-select field: For choosing multiple options.
- Free text field: For open-ended text input, which can include unique values, such as codes.
Custom attributes enable organizations to customize their data organization according to specific needs and enhance the analysis across multiple modules.
How to define custom attributes
Enterprise users can define custom attributes in the Settings. Here are the steps and options:
-
Define essential details:
- Name: Must be unique within the organization.
- Type: Choose between Free text, Single-select, or Multi-select.
- Description: Provide guidance for users when assigning values.
-
Configure additional options:
- Make the attribute mandatory.
- Limit value editing for more control.
- For Free text type: Allow unique values (e.g. identification codes).
- For Single-select and Multi-select types: Create, delete, or sort selectable options.
-
Manage definitions:
Once created, custom attributes can be updated or deleted. Users can:- Rename the attribute.
- Select or deselect any additional options.
- Modify options for Single-select or Multi-select fields.
Important: Custom attributes cannot be deleted if they are being used in segments. A message will indicate which segments are using the attribute to guide the user.
How to assign values to a custom attribute
Admins can assign values to custom attributes. To do so:
- Navigate to the Entities page.
- Select the desired entity.
- In the entity details, locate the Custom Attributes section.
- Click Edit to open a modal where all custom attribute values for the entity can be assigned.
Important considerations
- Attribute type: Once created, the type of a custom attribute cannot be changed.
- Deleted options: Removing options from Single-select or Multi-select fields will also delete any assigned values.
- Free text constraints: If values already exist, the Unique value option cannot be enabled but can be disabled.
- Multi-select limitations: Multi-select attributes cannot be used to create segments.
- Segments dependency: Custom attributes in use within segments cannot be deleted.
- Dashboards: To use custom attributes in Dashboards, first create a segment using the attribute, then display it in the Dashboard.
