The Guest Type Purpose tells CXP that a Question's responses represent a guest's travel type, like Business, Family, or Couple. When you set this Purpose correctly, guest responses automatically populate the Traveller Type segment in the Reviews by Segment chart on the Survey Reviews dashboard, letting you compare feedback across traveler segments.
Benefits of Guest Type Segmentation
- See how different types of guests rate their stay, all in one dashboard.
- Spot trends between segments, like Business travelers versus Families.
- Keep segmentation consistent across every Questionnaire in your Survey.
- Compare guest experience data without building custom Reports.
How Guest Type Segmentation Works
When you create a Single Selection Question and set its Purpose to Guest Type, CXP looks for a set of standard answer options: Business, Family, Couple, Single, and Friends. CXP matches each guest's response to one of these categories and groups it accordingly in the Reviews by Segment chart.
This matching only works when the answer options use these standard values. If a Guest Type Question is built with different or custom values instead (for example, numbered options like "1" or "2"), CXP can't match the responses to a segment. The responses still get collected, but they show up as Unknown in the chart instead of the correct traveler type.
Note: Changing a Question's Purpose from Other to Guest Type only applies going forward. Responses collected before the change keep their original Purpose and won't be reflected in the Traveller Type segment. Only responses received after you make the change show up correctly.
Setting Up a Guest Type Question Correctly
- In the Question Library, create a new Question or edit an existing one.
- Set Type to Single Selection.
- Choose a Variation, either Dropdown or Radio Button.
- Set Purpose to Guest Type.
- Add the five standard answer options: Business, Family, Couple, Single, and Friends. You can translate the labels guests see, but keep the underlying options as these five standard values.
- Add the Question to your Questionnaire's Content step.
Note: Purpose can't be changed after a Question is saved, unless it's set to Custom. If you need to fix a Guest Type Question that's already live, create a new Question with the correct setup and swap it in, rather than trying to change the Purpose on the existing one.
Troubleshooting: Guest Type Data Showing as "Unknown"
If your Reviews by Segment chart shows responses under Unknown instead of a traveler type, check the following:
- Confirm the Question's Purpose is set to Guest Type, not Other or Custom.
- Confirm the Question's Type is Single Selection.
- Confirm the answer options match the five standard values: Business, Family, Couple, Single, and Friends. Custom or numeric option values won't populate the chart correctly, even though guests can still answer the Question.
- Confirm you're only looking at responses received after the Question's Purpose was set to Guest Type. Earlier responses won't be reclassified.
